It would be hard to find a more unlikely pair than these two. He, an experienced boatman who has already seen everything on his ship, the African Queen, just wants to enjoy life in peace and in the slipstream. She has lived her whole life in the slipstream. The respectable daughter of a respected pastor's family desires nothing more than adventure and daring deeds, of course within the limits of bourgeois morality. Through a chain of coincidences, the two find themselves on the same ship together, literally, and surrounded by the enemy to boot. An unenviable situation: they get in each other's way, get on each other's nerves, have wildly different views on drinking alcohol, singing religious songs, how to counter the German threat and what is or is not a patriotic duty. But together they finally manage to navigate dangerous rapids, survive enemy fire, treacherous shoals, shipwrecks and mosquito attacks, and turn their initial mutual enmity into great love. This humorous and dramatic story is set in Africa in the middle of World War I and away about what a wise woman can do to a man in love, has entertained readers and audiences for many years and has lost none of its appeal.
