Bedřich Smetana Together with The Bartered Bride, The Mouthpiece is one of Smetana's most performed operas. The composer composed the work at a time when he was already deaf and thus experienced the most dramatic moments of his life. In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, he succeeded in imprinting the poetry of the Czech countryside interwoven with catchy melodies. The lyrical image of a young village couple, Vendulka and Lukáš, with a not-so-complex plot, reveals how it turns out when two people quarrel over a sponge. The libretto was created by Eliška Krásnohorská based on a short story by Karolina Světlá, who wrote it based on a true story from a small village in Podještědí.
