Totally East: Life in the GDR

| Sparkasse Zittau

Neiße Filmfestival

In the 1980's, Harald Hauswald wandered through East Berlin and took pictures of things others didn't see or found uninteresting: small every-day happenings, a person alone, couples in love, rockers, hooligans and young people speaking up for peace and environmental protection. One of the maxims of the Socialist Realism - "The person is at the center of it all" - a declaration of love for the people of the GDR. An oft almost tender relationship developed which even today is transmitted to the viewer. The historian and author Stefan Wolle, also from the GDR, wrote texts to accompany the pictures.
